Dorothy Eugenia Rose Hines Williams Twitty was born in Madisonville, Kentucky into the union of George Nelson Williams and Odessa Williams (nee Rainey). She was the younger of two daughters. The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky when she was very young. Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age.
Dorothy earned her BS degree in Sociology from Kentucky State University. It was during her college years that she pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., won Ms. Kentucky State and met her college sweetheart, James A. Twitty (deceased). After graduating from Kentucky State University, Dorothy taught secondary education in Louisville and Cincinnati. Dorothy and James were married and into this union was born their son, Ronald J. Twitty.
Always helping others, she also tutored high school students in English and Math after school. Armed with a strong faith in God, Dorothy lived a life of service by empowering others. Working with Cincinnati Recreation Commission, she was a community organizer for the Riverview Neighborhood House. Dorothy supervised social groups, led interracial groups, worked with and mentored juvenile delinquent teen aged girls and was a Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts.
Dorothy then spent the next 25 years training and supervising case workers for the Hamilton County Job and Family Services Department until she retired in 1988. It was at that time, Dorothy received a State of Ohio Proclamation for her service by former State Representative William Mallory, Sr.
Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star Golden Link #91 and the Court of the Calanthe White Lily Court #89. Her missionary work at Lee Chapel A.M.E. Church included serving several years as the Treasurer for the Women‟s Missionary Society and in 2009 she was elected as its President. Her tireless and unwavering commitment as a missionary was recognized when she was honored as the “Missionary of the Year” in 2008.
Dorothy Rose Twitty was preceded in death by both her parents, her sister, Mary Jane Fant and one grandson, Allen M. Shannon. She is survived by her son, Ronald James (Yvonne) Twitty; a special ‘daughter’, Brenda Y. Twitty; 3 grandchildren, Amber J. Twitty, Evan J. Twitty and Ronald J. Jones; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; 3 nephews and a host of family and friends.
