Gwendolyn Melson (Hutchins) was born on November 22, 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the only child of Louis C. W. Hutchins and Katherine L. Hutchins. For eleven years, she was the only grandchild in the family on both sides.
Gwen started school at Hoffman elementary. While at Hoffman, she passed the test to attend Walnut Hills High School. She graduated from Walnut Hills in 1957. Though she was an extremely talented artist and could have gone to college in that field, she wanted a career that allowed her to help others. Thus after getting her high school diploma, she entered nursing school and worked at a variety of hospitals in Cincinnati and Kentucky throughout her life time.
In 1973, Gwen visited Greater Liberty Baptist Church, which was were her son had joined Boy Scouts. From that day on, Greater Liberty became the church where her family would worship. She continued to attend Greater Liberty, even after her children joined other churches, until she was unable go on her own.
Everyone who met Gwen, even a week before she was called home, complimented on her outward beauty, but she had an inner strength that people who did not know her could not see. She followed a path that was based on the values of her family and her religious beliefs. She was not afraid of standing up for what she believed and could not be swayed by what the majority was doing. These traits she passed on to her children.
Gwendolyn is survived by five children, Kirk Adrian Jackson, Joe Louis Davenport Jr., Robert Francis Jackson Sr., Tammy Sarah Jackson and Julian Davenport. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren and four young great-grandchildren who, were just beginning to know her. She is also leaves behind a host of cousins and friend. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her, but her memory will live in their hearts and through the stories passed down to the younger generation.
