Watch Video TributeThelma Jean Singleton was born on February 22, 1926 in West Virginia as the eldest
daughter to Rachel Yorrell and Pete Craig. She moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and attended
Woodward High School. Following graduation, she began work as an elevator operator
at the Cincinnatian Hotel. She would later marry Tommy Carr and move to the West
Coast.
Following her mother’s passing, she returned to Cincinnati and began work as a
surgical technician for Good Samaritan Hospital. She worked for the hospital system for
well over 25 years before retiring. She later came out of retirement and worked for the
Board of Education and for the U.S. Postal Service before finally retiring at the age of
84.
She married Calvin Singleton on August 8, 1986. They were together until his passing
in 2009. While no children were born to their union, she was a beloved stepmother to
his children. All that knew her, knew of the love that she had for her dogs, Sugar, Missy,
Champagne and finally her “baby boy” Tommy.
She received the Lord into her life at an early age and was received into the Catholic
church in 2013.
To summarize her life in these few words is impossible. She loved all things
fashionable; from clothes to shoes, fine jewelry and world travel. She lived and enjoyed
her life up until the very end. She will be remembered as the outspoken matriarch of the
family with a generous heart, dry sense of humor and a deep loyalty to those that she
held dear.
Thelma passed peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. She was preceded
in death by: her parents; her brothers, James, Clarence and Cornelius; and her husband,
Calvin. Those left to cherish her memory include: her brother, Donald Craig (Judy);
sister-in-law, Dorothy (James); stepchildren, Calvin and Cathy; 14 nieces and nephews,
and innumerable friends and other relatives.
