Cawthorn Miree Sr. was born on May 21, 1935 in Perryville, Alabama to Pastor Mozelle Miree Sr. and Ozzie Mae Holman. Cawthorn was a distinguished gentleman. Spiritual, tall in stature, and strong in both body and mind, he commanded attention. He was an impressive orator, with a natural gift for public speaking and speech writing that he would later pass down to his children.
The second oldest of eight kids, he quickly developed leadership skills that would serve him well in the United States Army and at the United States Postal Service. He traveled across the country as a military boxer and became a heavy weight champion. Additionally, as a 33-year employee of the United States Postal Service, he was elected Director of the Union.
His honorable work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to work two jobs for many years while buying and selling rental properties, cars, and air conditioners so that his family would have all their needs and most of their wants. Even after retiring, he decided he wanted to stay busy and interact with people, so he worked part-time at Wal-Mart. There, his management also came to realize that he was a highly valued employee with integrity and honored him with an employee of the year award at their national meeting.
Cawthorn married his beautiful bride, Henrietta, in 1963 after six months of courtship. They put God at the head of their union, and he oversaw it for 55 amazing years. Cawthorn was a protector…there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his Cookie or “Squaw,” as he affectionately called her. This honest, God-fearing man was a formidable example of a husband, provider, father and a human being.
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” He is with his son, Cawthorn Jr. dancing and singing in their baritone voices at the Master’s footstool.
Cawthorn Miree Sr. is survived by his loving wife Henrietta Miree, their three children: David Miree (Lisa), Chris Miree, and Lisa Miree Luke (Triandos). His grandchildren: Marisa Miree, Tres Miree, Noah Miree, Joshua Miree, Jonathan Miree, Christopher Miree, Sean Miree, Samaria Luke and Landon Luke. His two great grandchildren: Alayah Miree and Chase McMillian.
