Kathy, you and your family have my deepest sympathies! Chris was my first boss and mentor. I was 18 years old In June 1970, when he hired me at The Citizens’ Committee On Youth to be his administrative assistant. I worked for him for the next 10 years in various job titles including a stint at his company, Urban Properties. The foundation of knowledge I received from him allowed me to progress upward to head City departments or like-level positions in 4 States. His management style was firm and gentle, one he attributed to his mentor, Harry Martin. He has mentored many Black men and women over the years. When I have won awards or been asked to give speeches, I always tell my audiences Henry Lewis Christmon significantly contributed to my success. He will never be forgotten!

I was born and spent my childhood in Richmond, Indiana. I grew up knowing the Christmon family, Henry and all his brothers. My childhood friend Carolyn Jackson became Henrys sister-in-law. When my husband and I moved into Paddock Hills, I was surprised to learn Henry and family lived right around the corner. My boys grew up with Henrys sons often playing ball. He was a fine person, and loving father, always cheerful and a good neighbor who will be missed. I am writing to extend our sympathy to the Christmon family, for your loss of husband and father. Grace, Bob,Tony and Alex Meacham

Henry Christmon was a very Special, Talented and Caring Gentleman and Professional! I have a Letter of Recommendation that Mr. Christmon wrote for me when I was Up for a Big Job at the State in late 1979. Sadly, when Reagan won the Presidency, the Opportunity was Removed! I have Cherished that Letter All my Life! I have also enjoyed a Wonderful, Productive and Satisfying Career as a Professional Consultant, a Psychologist, a Clinical Therapist and as Manager of the Adolescent Drug Court in Clermont County and now as a Writer! I OWE a HUGE amount of Gratitude and due to Mr. Christomon’s Personal Motivation, he made me the Man that I am Today! May Mr. Christmon's Soul Rest in Peace and I will Contact his Family to Share my Thoughts and Thank them for allowing Mr. Christmon to become one of my Dearest Heroes and for sharing his Quiet, Subtle and Christ Driven Energies with those around us! - Rick Rotundo

Marion Kent left a message on January 28, 2021:
Henry Christmon was one of the best work supervisors I had the pleasure of working under. He was a supportive and caring mentor and friend. Whenever I spent work and personal time with Henry, his wife Kathleen (Kathy), family, and Professional Associates, I was always struck by his kindness, generosity and grace. I was always reminded of the true City of Cincinnati trailblazer he was and the many educational and job training projects Henry and his CCY and City of Cincinnati Employment and Training Division Staffs and program contractors provided to the citizens of the City of Cincinnati, both youth and adults. Today, my loving daughter Venus Renee Kent and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Christmon family and everyone who was inspired and touched by the many good and loving deeds of Henry’s towering life examples that the world will deeply miss! Rest in peace my friend - Marion James Rufus Kent, Ph.D.
Kathy Holzderber left a message on January 28, 2021:
II am truly grateful and fortunate to have spent over 20 years of my working career under the guidance and direction of Mr. C. It was an adventure to be on his team. The team was deeply committed to providing opportunities and resources to those in need of employment and/or career development, Barriers to job retention were removed by locating a wide array of supportive services such as childcare, transportation, lack of tools, and appropriate job clothing. Laughter was our medicine to deal with pressures and deadlines. He provided us with the freedom to take chances and make mistakes without fear of reprimand. Even though he was the “boss”, I learned from him the “customer was the boss” and if you stayed true to this: Mission Accomplished. The same loyalty and love that he had for his family, he brought to his work and we flourished. Thank You Mr. C for sharing your wisdom and caring ways. - Kathy Holzderber
Jerry B Brown left a message on January 28, 2021:
Mr. "C", as he was affectionately called, was a great man. The life of this humble man, cannot be summed up in a few words. He did what he was put on this earth to do. He helped his fellow man, and made a difference in the lives of so many people, including my wife Anita and me. He wasn't about recognition for what he did, he walked and worked quietly, doing the most good, for all the people that he could. I can't believe that his work was in vain. I must believe that God was pleased with his service. It was my privilege to know him. I will truly miss him. - Jerry B. Brown, Jr.

MEMORIES of HENRY LEWIS CHRISTMON 'Life has a beginning, an ending and a span in between. Our creator sets the proper time for our existence. In His infinite mercy, He gives us time to live, love and glorify HIM.' While on this earth, Mr. Christmon’s mission was: to find people who could help {people} needing “a little boost”. He took his mission seriously and created an outstanding team needed to do “his thang”. May he receive the promised rewards from THE MOST HIGH!!! Henry L. Christmon, “The Godfather and The Magician” of The City of Cincinnati's Employment and Training Division. For over 24 years, he touched the lives of over 200,000 people. Many times, Mr. “C” as he was so fondly called, would announce the availability of programs via the infamous Request for Proposal [RFP] process. The needed services were GREAT opportunities for those organizations whose mission was compatible with “The Vision”. He had an uncanny ability of bringing excellent blends of talent to the table; thereby, designing a revolving seamless array of services for: youth (in and out of school); people who had been laid off; people receiving public assistance; and last but not least, the ex-offenders and customers who were 55 years of age. Moreover, his process allowed organizations to expand their staff. Many times, these expansions were jump starts for: new college graduates, people wanting a career change and people looking for innovative and energizing ways to “give back”. Mr. “C” required that all programs funded, via ETD dollars, include staff development with a central theme of personal and professional growth. There will never be another “ETD”, NEVER. Mr.”C” was the Magician. He had so much confidence and trust in his team that he had no need to micromanage. He just emphasized “Do right by our customers.” His keen senses told him whether the ship was on point. When he wanted a particular project completed, he may request a discussion with a select group of service providers along with his TEAM. We loved him so much that His personal request for a meeting was motivation enough for his staff and service providers to “get busy” and WALLAH! new opportunities for our customers. There was not one thing he could ask that the TEAM would not work until dark of night to please him. We TRUSTED his judgment; and wanted to receive his “nod”. It was an honor to work with Mr. C. The Quiet Storm was so cool. The brother did not even have to raise his voice except to laugh as only he could. We always knew where we stood regarding performance. Mr. “C” would be so on point that we would jest and say “The Godfather has spies!!” As our gentle leader and cheerleader, he was definitely “The Wind Beneath our Wings”!!!! WE will always love Mr. “C” .... HIS Legacy not to be forgotten EVER!!!! May your spirit find rest and contentment. YOU deserve it !!! Iris A. Hall

I met Henry Christmon (hereafter referred to as Chris) as a young professional in the Model Cities Program. He was the director of the Citizens’ Committee on Youth (CCY) and Luther Church was his deputy. At that time, I was the first female African American professional on the staff at Model Cities. Often, Chris would pull me aside and talk with me, asking me if I was being treated alright. He let me know that he was interested in my career and that he was available to talk with me whenever I needed to do so. Later in my career, I recall Chris telling me that we (African Americans) don't get the easy jobs, only those no one else wanted or messed up. He left CCY and went to the City of Cincinnati. He was one of the first African American professionals in the City who had responsibility division director. Chris was an excellent and creative administrator and helped many people. Often, people would say, if you need a job see Chris and he'll find one for you. Chris is one of the last pioneers; many of his peers are now gone. Chris had wisdom and a passion for helping people in need. He made a major impact in the city changing the lives of many people. I’m grateful that my path crossed Chris’ and for the support that he provided to me throughout my career. - Cheryl Meadows

During the last thirty-seven (37) years of Clyde Richard’s life, he had a relationship with someone who greatly impacted the way he viewed life and the world. Someone who had high standards and truly stood for something. Someone who inspired and motivated him. Someone who taught him to set goals and instilled the confidence and spirit to achieve them. A true leader and human being. Such a person was Henry Lewis Christmon, aka “Mr. C”. Clyde always said that “Mr. C” had that unique quality that made everyone around him feel truly committed to him and his mission to create programs that improved the lives of Cincinnati residents, their families, and their communities. Because “Mr. C” was so committed to the mission, his staff shared in his commitment. Working for “Mr. C” was not a job, but a joy, a “calling” to help all people reach their true potential (and this included his staff). We will miss “Mr. C”, but we are all better and blessed by his life. Thank you “Mr. C”…WE LOVE YOU. – Betty Richard
