James Oliver Shugars was born in Montgomery, Alabama on May 4th, 1947 to the late Perry Shugars and Johnnie Mae Laury. James was called home on January 9th, 2021. His belief in Christ was confessed at an early age. James was educated in Cincinnati Public Schools and attend Withrow High School. James met the love of his life Linda (“Linny Boo”) O’neal at Hughes High School and they later married in 1974. Unto this union 3 children were born, Lashawn R. Williams, Montez K. Shugars and Jamie Shugars. James was affectionally called Shugar and sometime Shug by all that knew and loved him. Throughout his life, Shugar had many passions and interests including spending time at the casino, playing cards with friend and family and using his musical ability playing the guitar. Shugar was an entrepreneur and sole proprietor of J.O. Shugars Painting and Construction Company for most of his professional life, until he became ill. One of his greatest accomplishments was being selected to paint a National Historic Treasure, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. Shugar was a true family man and supported in his children’s and grandchildren’s endeavors. He took great pride in their accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his grandmother and grandfather Alberta and Johnnie Watkins, mother, Johnnie Mae Laury, his father Perry Shugars, his aunts Rose Conners, Emily Robinson, Frances Willis and uncle Willie Watkins. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Linda, children, Deirdra, Shawnie (Donald), Jaime and Montez (Jacqueline), sister in laws Barbara, Diana, and Brandy, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Shugar will be remembered for his great spirit, incredibly infectious laugh and the many nicknames that he gave to family, many that last still to this day. Special thanks to Shugars physician, Dr. Goel and the entire Foster family. Your expressions of love will always be remembered. May God continue to richly bless you.
